It Was Never About the Rules: The Heart of the Sabbath
If you’ve ever felt like religion was just a list of rules to follow, you’re not alone. In Luke 6:1 11, we find Jesus being accused by the religious leaders (again) for breaking the Sabbath. But was He really?
Why Did God Create the Sabbath?
The Sabbath wasn’t created as a burden. It was a gift from God; a rhythm of rest meant to refresh the soul and reconnect with the Lord. But over time, religious leaders added layer after layer of rules. What God meant for restoration, they turned into restriction.
What Went Wrong with the Sabbath?
Over time, the religious leaders added rule after rule to “protect” the Sabbath. What started as rest became regulation. That’s what we see in Luke 6:1–11, where Jesus is accused of breaking Sabbath laws. All because He and His disciples picked a few heads of grain to eat. Later, He heals a man, and again, the Pharisees claim it’s unlawful. They loved the law more than they loved people.
How Did Jesus Respond to Legalism?
Jesus reminded them of something they knew well: even King David once broke ceremonial law to care for his men—and God didn’t condemn him for it. Then Jesus made it clear: “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” In other words, Jesus holds authority over both the law and the day itself. He came not to abolish the Sabbath, but to reveal its true purpose: healing, wholeness, and hope.
What Does This Mean for Us Today?
Maybe you’ve felt like faith was more about following rules than knowing Jesus. But the truth is, God’s commands are meant for our good. They’re like guardrails, not chains. They keep us from drifting into danger; not because He wants to control us, but because He cares deeply for us.
How Can We Start Living Out What We Know?
You don’t have to know everything. Just live what you do know. Read the Word. Respond in love. Take the next faithful step. Even if it’s small. God’s not looking for perfection. He’s looking for surrender.
So today, ask yourself: Am I following Jesus out of love, or just following rules?
Because the way of Jesus has always been about relationship over religion, compassion over control, and grace over guilt. And that’s really good news!
